Litigation Paralegal – Boston, MA

Assist attorneys across practice areas on a wide variety of litigation matters as they progress through the various phases of the legal system. May draft documents, assist in preparation for depositions, hearings, and trials, and perform other administrative duties (calendar hearings and deadlines, organize case files, manage logistics). Will exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of job duties. Maintain positive contact with clients and observe confidentiality of client matters.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Prepare initial drafts of correspondence, pleadings, motions, disclosures, discovery requests, forms, filings, and other documents, as requested by firm attorneys.
  • Monitor case calendars and docket deadlines. Work with attorneys to apprise them of and assist them to meet those deadlines.
  • Review and analyze cases to assist in preparation of for trial.
  • Coordinate electronic discovery.
  • Establish, organize, and maintain attorney trial and case notebooks, expert witness notebooks, and document indices and lists.
  • Conduct legal research, analyze caselaw, and draft legal memoranda, as directed.
  • Monitor case filings and provide detailed assessments to attorneys.
  • Review, evaluate, and summarize discovery documents including medical records, employment records, and other case material.
  • Draft subpoenas and monitor for compliance. Review and summarize documents received.
  • Compile motion packages for filing with the court.
  • Assist with the preparation and proofreading of briefs, memoranda, and exhibits.
  • Collect material from client, opposing parties, and third parties (hard copies, electronic data, physical evidence).
  • Assist at all phases of litigation including motion practice, discovery, arbitration, trial, and appellate procedures.
  • Select, collate, and prepare binders of key documents during litigation phases including depositions, mediation, arbitration, and trial.
  • Administratively manage all phases of a litigation case including litigation motion practice, discovery, arbitration, trial, and appellate procedures.
  • Maintain and manage attorney calendar for court deadlines.
  • Responsible for overall case file maintenance including indexing, filing case materials, and following up on outstanding matters.
  • Assist attorneys with all phases of discovery, including first draft responses to discovery, as directed.
  • Manage and organize large volumes of documents including hard copy and electronic file.
  • Maintain a master set of all documents, keep updated records and correspondence files as well as preparing electronic files and binders of hard copy documents.
  • Keep accurate time records on a daily basis.

SECONDARY ELEMENTS:

  •  Ensure that work area and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe, and orderly condition and established company policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Paralegal certificate or other relevant work experience.
  • Applicable knowledge of motions, discovery, evidence, litigation documentation, court rules and procedures, practices, etc.
  • Familiarity with filing procedures in state and federal court, including the 9A procedures in Massachusetts.
  • Proficiency in legal terminology, legal and factual research, word processing, docketing, and electronic mail software.
  • Ability to proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical, typographical, or spelling errors.
  • Outstanding writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys, and staff, and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
  • Competently operate standard office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, fax machines, and scanners.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with attorneys, coworkers, subordinates, and outside vendors.
  • Experience with electronic document review platforms including key word searching and assistance in production coordination.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Superior attention to detail, proofreading skills, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must project a professional demeanor, effectively represent the firm, exhibit sound judgement, and maintain confidentiality.
